When architecture is thought of, churches, chapels, and holy grounds are often overshadowed by great works of commercial, civil, and residential architecture. These buildings may be used by communities privately or publicly, holding their space of worship as beyond sacred. “Modern Sacred Spaces of Puget Sound” looks at buildings designed by prominent Northwest architects who molded worship and sacred grounds into modern design. Their significance is not just design, but also meaningful to the communities that reside around them, and how they have shaped cities in the Pacific Northwest.
Our presenter is Brannon Ellinwood, who is a Master of Architecture graduate student at the University of Washington. This past summer, under the guidance of UW Architecture Professor and Docomomo US/WEWA Board member and past president Tyler Sprague, Brannon researched and documented several modern places of worship in western Washington. On October 18, he was the main presenter at our Modern Sacred Spaces Talk + Tour at Christ Episcopal Church in Tacoma. For this online program, Brannon will present his research on some remarkable modern religious properties in the region. Learn more about Brannon and the project in this blog post.
