Docomomo US/WEWA celebrates Freeway Park’s 50th year by producing a guided walking tour on September 15. Presented in partnership with Freeway Park Association (FPA) and Historical Research Associates (HRA), the tour will highlight the history and architectural significance of this masterpiece of landscape design. You’ll learn about preservation efforts, why Freeway Park is important today, and what this space can become.
The tour will be co-led by Riisa Conklin (Executive Director of FPA) and Chrisanne Beckner (HRA). The tour duration is about 90 minutes, and we’ll cover a good portion of the park.
ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED. This walking tour has limited space to maximize the experience. We expect to sell out quickly. Online tickets ($10 per person) will be available starting at NOON on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. Once the tour sells out, registration will close.

About Freeway Park: The 5.2-acre Freeway Park was opened on July 4, 1976 as the world’s first park built over an active highway, reconnecting First Hill and downtown. It was designed by Lawrence Halprin & Associates under the design direction of Angela Danadjieva who creatively transformed the airspace above Interstate 5 into a brutalist oasis of landscape, concrete canyons, and waterfalls. In 2019, the park was listed in the National Register of Historic Places and on July 6, 2022, it was unanimously designated as a Seattle Landmark.
